Meet Donald Young
Donald Young is an unusual combination of outdoorsman and scholar; artist and adventurer. A professional safari guide with over 30 years experience, Don is the owner of the Newland, Tarlton & Co. luxury brand.
As a naturalist and conservationist, Don has traveled widely in Africa and Asia, promoting education and conservation for endangered species. Don designed for the Hansa Toy Co. a collection of ‘plush toys’ of endangered species for young children (“Toys That Educate the Heart”) because Don believes the next generation holds the key for the survival of wildlife, and hopes this toy line will foster love and awareness for wild animals.
As a scholar, Don is regarded as one of the world’s authorities on African explorers and has published several academic works including “The Search for the Source of the Nile” published by the Roxburghe Club. Don is a trained forensic osteologist in the field of paleo-anthropology and is the discoverer (along with the safari group he was guiding at the time!) of an important human pre-historic site in northern Kenya.
Don has designed the tents and furnishings for his own safari camps, and has also created furniture collections for Ol Donyo Lodge, Kenya, Zarafa Camp, Botswana and Lukula Selous Camp, Tanzania.
As an author, Don is represented by the prestigious Inkwell Literary Agency and is currently writing his first novel: “The Spy, the Lover & the Devil’s Brother,” based on the story of Capt. Sir Richard Burton and his life in India at the time he ‘discovered’ the “Kama Sutra.”
Don serves on the Board of Directors of Lion Guardians / Wildlife Guardians, and the Elephant Trust / Amboseli Trust for Elephants. Don is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and a Member of the Explorer’s Club of New York.
Don’s safaris, public lectures, and his famous fireside stories, have touched the lives of thousands of people. Don has devoted his life to teaching about the natural world, and hopes that by sharing his knowledge and passion, he can help save wildlife and wilderness for the next generation.

Doriana LenakioSafari Guide
We have always believed that it is essential to include the unique perspective of a dynamic, intelligent and strong African woman as part of our guide team – and Doriana is all of those things and more! Doriana started her professional career as an elementary school teacher and administrator before joining the tourism industry and guiding for us. Doriana loves teaching the kids in our family groups about her Samburu heritage and is so respected for her knowledge of the heritage and crafts of both women and men, she has been blessed by Samburu elders as a “Warrior Woman.” Our families love Doriana and we welcome you to join us!
Joseph Murigu AVSafari Guide - Driver
We have just returned from our most magical vacation in 30 years and are grateful for your friendship, professionalism, kindness, understanding, tenderness, knowledge, and above all else your enthusiasm and love of Africa and all things African which we share with you. This safari was special just as the first trek with you was special, but somehow it transcended what we considered a perfect experience and entered the mystical realm of true spirituality. We savor your friendship and are appreciative to recognize that we enjoy the company of a scholar and artist who too loves Africa and is enthusiastic and kind enough to share it with others. By seeing Africa through your eyes, our eyes have been opened.Bob & Liz Esperti, Jackson Hole, WY
We wanted to let you know how much we appreciate the wonderful experience of our safari with you. The migration and other African wildlife lived up to and even exceeded our expectations, but your knowledge and expertise added another dimension. If this sounds like a commercial, it is surely intended to be; nevertheless, it is totally unsolicited and we hope will be given great weight should you choose to make our views known to prospective clients. Anyone wishing to visit Africa would benefit greatly from your professionalism and enthusiasm, and we are happy to say so through this letter or personally if anyone wishes to call us.Ed & Connie Jacob, New York, NY
Most of all, Don, we were impressed with your personal contribution to the success of our safari. Your significant knowledge of Africa, the animals, the people and the geology made the trip a once in a lifetime experience. In addition, your complete focus on safety and health precautions and your knowledge of various possible risks made us feel especially secure during the whole journey. When and if we execute another African safari, it will definitely be with Donald Young Safaris.Lawrence S. Jordan, Costa Mesa, CA
Dreams do come true! About 25 years ago I had the great fortune of meeting Don Young. Since then we have become great friends. Around the first time we met he showed me a photo of a lodge at Lewa Wilderness - and I told him that someday I wanted to take my wife to that very place. In 2013 Don helped make it happen - and it exceeded our wildest expectations. Africa is now in our blood and we can't wait to return and revisit all our friends with Donald Young Safaris.Paul and Deb Burner, Lincoln NE
